Good morning, Dear Ones,
The Holy Spirit directs me to write about creativity and enjoyment in parenting today. I don’t profess to be an expert in this issue, but the God certainly is. Creativity is a gift from the Lord like any skill is. Different people have different skills. We should start with Him! God’s most essential skill is creation. GN 1: 1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” GN 1: 3, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” GN 1: 11, “God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation, seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so.” GN 1: 20, 22, “And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky…Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” GN 1: 24, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds…And it was so.” GN 1: 27, “So God created mankind in His own image…male and female.” He gave humans the responsibility to take care of the earth, to name and care for all the living things on it, and to be fruitful and multiply. He also created day and night, although His time and ours isn’t the same. Now, that’s creation!
If you are wondering what this has to do with creativity and enjoyment in parenting, believe me it does. There is no doubt God wants us to understand and act in line with His teaching in the Scriptures. Creativity is nothing new, as we learn from EX 31: 2-5. God instructed Bezalel, son of Uri and grandson of Hur from the tribe of Judah to make artistic designs, working with gold, silver, and bronze, engaging in all kinds of crafts in the construction of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. Others were also given these skills. Some knew how to build furniture for the Tabernacle. Still others made garments for the priests and Levites who would work there from the tribe of Levi. In EX 35: 5-9, God instructed Moses about how to acquire the materials needed through offerings of gold, silver, bronze, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, fine linen, goat hair, ram skins dyed red, leather, acacia wood, olive oil, spices, fragrant incense, precious stones and other gems. That’s how early creativity is discussed in the Bible.
Parenting is a divine calling and one of God’s purposes for us. EPH 2: 8-10 reminds us of the nature of His grace and how we were created to do good deeds. That certainly applies to parenting, one of the most important tasks we are called to do with creativity and joy. Children are a gift from God and parenting is a sacred calling. DT 6: 6-7 [God speaking], “These are the commandments I give you today which are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” God is referring to loving and worshipping Him and the Ten Commandments. To add, God has said what Jews call, the Shema: “Here O Isreal: The Lord your God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, and your might” [DT 6: 4-5]. That’s first and foremost.
Of course, there is much more to creative and enjoyable parenting. PR 22: 6, “Train a child in the way he should go; even in his old age he will not turn from it.” We are encouraged to bring variety and inspiration into our children’s lives. Pictures, storytelling, games, travel and other family activities are ways to do this. Unforeseen talents may arise from using these ways to bring joy into learning. (I remember the very first time at age 4 when I was given colorfully illustrated cards with holes in them and told to thread yarn through those holes. That led to my life-long interest in drawing, painting, sewing, and crochet. Later, my great-aunt spent time teaching me how to knit and work crossword puzzles). Travels with my parents gave me a taste for other cultures and to continue that practice with family.
PRAYER: Dearest Father, we are grateful beyond measure for the gifts and blessings You give us. We know they are from You because of JAS 1: 17, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, Who does not change like shifting shadows.” Your teachings are consistently true and Your heart generous to all. Your love is unparalleled and blessings are many. We offer You our faith, loyalty, love, devotion, thanksgiving, and utmost praise. In the holy/mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
NEXT WEEK: I have been commanded by the Holy Spirit to write about God’s moral compass in parenting next week. Meanwhile, we are encouraged to bring inspiration to parenting our children, just as God did in creating us. PS 104: 24, “How many are Your works, Lord? In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.” While our ways of creating are not a grand as God’s, He has still given us the power to discover ways to encourage our children to appreciate the beauty of His creation and to give them opportunities to create according to their innate skills. Watching a child grow, using the talents he or she has yields a loving parent real joy. Thanksgiving and praise be to God!
